How to be a White Ally to People of Color-led Organizations
Adam Roca explores the question: What does it mean to be an anti-racist white ally to a POC-led organization?
But within that question, there are many big issues bound up in it:
What is white privilege, how does it work, and how do we work to undo it?
How do white folks fit into the struggle without perpetuating unequal power relationships?
Are all-white spaces even a good idea in the first place? Aren't they racist and exclusionary?!
In this project, I will facilitate a conversation/brainstorming session to flesh out some of these issues. Some basic understanding of white privilege and acceptance of the idea that white allyship is important is definitely helpful. While we will briefly go over these concepts, this space isn't really intended to be used to debate its merits. The intention is for folks to share their experiences and come up with ideas of how to best put these ideas into practice.
I will also supply several handouts, zines, and list of other sources where folks can further explore the topics. I am approaching the topic from the perspective of the Coalition of Anti-Racist Whites (CARW) in Seattle, WA. I went through their 10-week training institute and have been organizing with them for the past 6 months.
Oh yeah, I'm more than open to collaborate with anyone else who wants to help facilitate this process. Although I plan on sharing my experiences both with my own anti-racism organizing and what I learned at CARW, the time will be more workshop and discussion-based. So, I don't think it would be too difficult to coordinate with others who want to help me plan this process over phone/e-mail.
